Boot from the USB Drive. Restart your computer and boot from the USB drive (Press Esc/F8/Del to access the boot selection menu). Use the arrow keys to select Boot OS X Install from Install OS X El Capitan (It should be selected by default). Press the spacebar and select Boot Mac OS X in verbose mode. Hey there. I've got an iMac 27' mid 2011 which has a dying hard drive inside, which is causing it not to boot. The only other Mac I have around is a PowerMac G5. I've read in the Apple Support forum that you need a system running El Capitan or later to use createinstallmedia, but I don't really have another choice, except on windows (which I haven't read anything on about this). What I want to do is create a bootable USB drive with any recent enough OS for the iMac (I believe it can run anything from Mountain Lion to High Sierra, it was previously running High Sierra).
